Sat 21 – Sun 22 October 2017
A two-day trek with overnight wildcamp in the heart of the Cairngorms, including photography guidance and tuition with the opportunity to photograph the night skies.
Due to its remoteness, the Cairngorm mountain wilderness has spectacularly dark skies, which act as an amazing canvas for the wonders of the universe. Here a multitude of stars, the Milky Way and even the elusive Aurora Borealis can be witnessed in the peace and solitude of the mountains.
During 2017 we are once again offering our amazing photographic treks along the stunning Cairngorm mountain range. This will include guidance in evening and night photography with a high wildcamp to best capture the dark star-filled skies.
Photography of such a wild and remote environment can only really be achieved by spending a night in the mountains. Myrddin Irwin, our award winning Photographer and Qualified Mountain Leader, will pass on his expert knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for photographing the great outdoors. Trekking and photography has been his life for many years and he will guide you to many of his favourite magnificent viewpoints, away from the beaten track and high within the Cairngorm mountain range.
Taught techniques will include:
- How to pre-plan and get the best results for evening, night and early morning landscape photography.
- How to photograph in low-light and night-time conditions, aiming for starry sky shots.
- How to use the full potential of your creative mind, camera and lens, whilst adapting to the ever-changing light, terrain and weather conditions.
- Using available features in the landscape to add meaning and depth to your photography.
- Time-lapse photography.
While this is a dedicated photography trek, it will still have all of the great features of our normal multi-day treks, including the use of basic mountaineering skills, wildcamp craft, opportunities to learn navigation and the chance to gain a better understanding of the history, geology, flora and fauna of the area. Both days will be full trekking days, so opportunities for photography will be vast and varied, making use of the multiple iconic viewpoints that the Cairngorms have to offer. We will aim to make a base camp early on so that pack loads can be lightened for photography.
The group size has been reduced for our photography trek. This will ensure that each individual will get the best possible use of Myrddin’s time
